Shawna + Gaston Wedding

Shawna and Gaston Varela had their wedding in Vegas (oh yea!!!, haha), but they had their reception, here, in Louisville at the Frazier Memorial Museum downtown. The reception had great food, dancing, and an open bar! The food was excellent, they had these awesome cream-cheese-stuffed-twice-baked-potato bites (our absolute favorite) and pesto chicken. Haha, I’m kind of a food hobbyist 🙂

Other than the food, everyone was smiling. Shawna has to be one of the “smilingest” brides we’ve ever met. She has this ability to be totally beautiful, make an incredibly dorky face, and then turn it back around to something even more beautiful and classy (plus, she’s just really cool). We didn’t meet Gaston until the day of photography, which is usually a no-no as far as my rules go (we always want to meet everyone so their comfortable), but after some drinking and dancing, he warmed right up and we had a great time for the rest of the night.

If you have the opportunity to have a reception at the Frazier Museum – I suggest you take it from them and reserve the 4th floor and go up to the roof at sunset. We had a blast having Shawna spin, Gaston spin her, and taking photos the whole time.

They’ve reserved an engagement style session this fall; there will be more pics to come!!

2011 Balloon Glow

These are a few photos of our epic trip to the Louisville Balloon Glow. First we were treated to the experience of photographing the inside of the Park Community Balloon as it inflated. After that thrill, we walked the line of balloons awaiting another “perfect shot”. I looked to the sponsoring US Bank Balloon and decided it needed to be shot. Along with the energizer bunny, being the most unique shaped balloon there. This adventure is one of our many answers as to why we love photography so much.

Kifle + Freweini Wedding

Kifle & Freweini had one of those weddings that wasn’t just a wedding – it was a celebration throughout. When we first met with Kifle and asked him if there were anything we needed to know that was special to their day “..or is it just a normal wedding?” He replied, “Just a normal wedding.” But you’ll see in the photos, it was a more unique than expected with the word “normal”.
From the moment you walked in the door – everyone was smiling, dancing, playing, laughing, and just rejoicing! Their son, Ethan, was a non-stop smiler!!! I can’t speak for all Ethiopian families, but in Kifle and Freweini’s, the culture and love runs deep.
You can see from the photos below that this wedding is a vibrant, cultural, and spirited celebration. During the ceremony everyone sang and the groomsmen played drums while the Bride and Groom were crowned King and Queen.
During the reception they danced in a huge circle introduced by the men wearing their guardsman’s attire and wielding swords that looked older than anything we’ve ever touched, passed down from generation to generation.
The music, the styles, the food – it was all different – for us anyways. We were treated to spicy foods that everyone ate with their hands (only ‘guests’ ate with their utensils, haha), spices were mixed together with a vegetable broth and sopped up by the bread they made for the occasion, and we were treated to a bottle T’ej (it’s an alcohol made from fermenting honey).
All and all this wedding was the most unique we’ve ever attended and we wish happiness unto Kifle and Freweini!
